company history

The Peninsula Compost Group, LLC, was founded in 2006 by Charles Gifford and Nelson Widell as a holding company to develop and operate large scale food waste composting facilities in the United States. Mr. Gifford and Mr. Widell determined that there was a market opportunity in composting pre- and post-consumer food waste at the commercial level and created a plan to design, build, own, and operate large scale commercial composting facilities in the United States. Construction of Peninsula’s first project in Wilmington, Delaware, was completed in 2009, with the capacity to compost up to 160,000 tons of material per year. Peninsula’s goal for the future is to develop and operate facilities throughout the United States in order to join the organic movement and solve the following universal problems:

  1. Landfills running out of space

  2. High tip fees at landfills that continue to escalate

  3. Methane emissions from landfills that cause climate change

  4. The need to replenish nutrients in the soil, which can be accomplished by using organic compost
